Music in Worship

Singing praise to God has been an integral part of Christian worhip down the centuries and across the world - and the same is true for the worship at St Johns. Some of our services also include an opportunity to listen to music - for example, to help ponder more deeply a reading or a prayer.

We are a community of people from different backgrounds, tastes and cultural experiences, all worshipping one God. We try to reflect that diversity in the music we use as we journey together along the road of faith. To get the full breadth of the music at St John's you would have to come for several Sundays. Our hope is that, whatever our background, the music will sometimes be familiar and reassuring and sometimes take us into new places and understandings of God.

St John's is fortunate in having a good number of talented musicians - singers and instrumentalists. Depending on when you come, you may find the music being led by St John's Music Group (a worship band with singers and instrments), our vibrant Youth Band, Hymnos ( a small 4 part choir) or a small orchestra. The organ is also used during many services in the main church building. (For enthusiasts: the organ is a fine 3 manual "orchestral" instrument, built by Binns in 1938).

We are always keen to welcome new musicians to join us. If you are interested in getting involved please do talk to someone in the music team, perhaps after a service.
